Winter is the quietest time on the farm.   The shorter days and longer nights don’t allow for much outdoor work.  All the fields, gardens, and livestock are bedded down for the season.  The daily chores consist of making sure everyone is dry and secure and has access to hay and water.  A good time to tackle indoor projects or sit in front of the fire of an evening.
